During National Apprenticeship week we would like to share some information about some of the CTS apprentices. The theme for National Apprenticeship Week 2020 is “Look Beyond”.

Apprentice Name: Shannon O’Doherty

Mentor Name: Stuart Higgins

Apprentice Start Date: January 2019

Role: Joiner

Department: Radius

College: Belfast Met

What opportunities has this apprenticeship gave you?

This apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to gain knowledge of the working environment outside collage along working with the opposite sex in the building trade, where not many females are present.

Do you think you have made much progress since starting?

Since starting this apprenticeship, I have learnt alot of new skills and have carried out many tasks which I did not think I could do. I also made alot of progress and met new people while doing it.

What aspects of the job have you enjoyed most?

I have enjoyed learning all of the above along with progressing every day in my joinery career, and enjoying doing this work.

Tell us about some jobs/projects/training you have been involved in and skills/knowledge gained?

I have carried out many joinery jobs such as fitting kitchen units, fitting composite doors, skirting, bath panelling etc. Carrying out these jobs I have learnt alot of skills on how to use the power tools and other equipment that I have never used. I also know how to do the actual job and complete these task on time.

Would you recommend people to consider taking the apprenticeship route?

I would strongly encourage others to do this apprenticeship because it has helped me alot on learning new things an also gave me an opportunity to complete my level 2 in Belfast Met. Also, because there are not alot of females in this working trade.

The theme for National Apprenticeship Week 2020 is “Look Beyond”. The goal is to highlight the talent and energy Apprentices bring into the workplace

CTS will be getting involved as we have 13 apprentices on board. We will be sharing information about some of our apprentices throughout the week. Showcasing their journey along with the fantastic and inspiring work they are doing, and the positive impact that they’re making at CTS.

Here at CTS we feel strongly about apprenticeships and believe that apprentices bring new energy and passion into the business.

Last year, CTS apprentice, David F Wilson reached the final of Ireland plumbing and heating awards. This is a great example of a CTS apprentice success story. David F Wilson was selected as a finalist in the category – Apprentice of the Year at Ireland’s Plumbing & Heating Awards 2019.

There was incredibly strong competition across all categories which is a reflection of the excellence which exists throughout the industry. The independent panel of expert judges scrutinised every application and highlighted the extremely high calibre of this year’s entries.

A great achievement for CTS apprentice, David getting recognised for the fantastic and inspiring work he has been carrying out.

Make sure you use the #LookBeyond and #NAW2020 hashtags, if you are getting involved.

The change of name from CTS Projects to CTS Connect Transform Sustain is less a re-brand and more a reaffirmation of the company’s commitment to its clients.

It is also a reflection of how the progressive Warrenpoint- based firm has evolved, beginning life as a building company before expanding into heating installation, then further diversifying into building maintenance and property development. That successful journey has been under-pinned by a mission statement, the promise to: “Establish lasting relationships with our customers by exceeding their expectations, and gaining trust through exceptional performance by every member of our team.”

Kirstie Dempster is a Computer Science student at Ulster University, Magee and is carrying out her placement year at CTS. Kirstie is working alongside our IT Systems manager, Joel and tells us about her CTS journey so far. Kirstie has been part of team CTS for over 4 months.

“Although, I haven’t been at CTS very long, I can honestly say I have enjoyed every minute of it. Everyone has been very welcoming and made me feel part of the team.

“I have gained the ability to produce concise yet thorough reports within IT and for other teams as needed and also improved my patience and ability to train the Operatives in both new and existing IT systems, Joel has been a massive help throughout all this training, teaching me at a good pace and allowing me to take extra time to understand certain things.

As a student and not having any previous experience this job has been challenging and hard work, but it is very enjoyable.

As every day is different and I am not stuck doing the same things every day, it has been an eye opener of what the I.T field is like and I am excited for the coming months to learn more.”

This annual event, by the Energy Saving Trust now in its 19th year looks to shine a spotlight on the importance of energy efficiency at home to reduce carbon emissions and make savings on energy bills.

CTS supports the campaign as our services include; Heating, Energy & Compliance. Senior Contracts Manager, Aidan Clarke states the following on energy efficiency;

“CTS ensures well-maintained boilers burn their fuel very efficiently, this is shown by having 100% oil and gas compliance throughout heating contracts”

senior contract manager, Aidan Clarke quote

Our first energy tip is putting your heating on a timer, so it goes on/off when you need it. You’ll reduce your carbon dioxide emissions. You could also save money on your heating bills by using your controls efficiently.

We also had a prize for the person in last place. We think Managing Director Connaire, might need a timeout from the bowling as he achieved the lowest score on the day.

As some of our employees are office based and some are out on the road, team building day’s like this help CTS coworkers get to know each-other better and build stronger relationships.

October marks the 16th annual National Cyber security Awareness Month (NCSAM). Here at CTS, we understand the importance of Cyber security. This year’s message is to, Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT., reminding everyone of the role we all play in online safety and security at home and in the workplace.

CTS recently obtained a cyber security certificate which shows the business has achieved a robust level of security that provides safe transferal of data in and out of the company. The certificate also entails that CTS follow a certain standard ensuring data is protected – such as password policies, access rights to certain locations etc.

There is now an increased prominence on cyber security in organisations due to many crippling cyber attacks. Like many businesses, CTS rely on technology to be connected at all times and conduct work effectively. Therefore, it is vital for more businesses to follow in the footsteps of CTS and introduce a robust, high level of cyber security.

CTS IT systems manager, Joel Caldwell states the importance of Cyber Security;

“Cyber security is present in everything we do these days, from sending an email to buying something online, each with their own set of risks.

“In reality, security is only ever a catch-up game between the creation of a new threat and the patching to protect against it.

“If you are to take one thing forward regarding Cyber Security it is to check, check and check again. Watch for the unusual  links on a web-pages, be wary of email links and if you aren’t sure if something is official, call the company and check if what was sent was genuine.”
